I was born in Washington, D.C. and have also lived in Pittsburgh and Houston before moving to Hawaii at age six. Both my parents were from Hawaii and we lived on the Mainland while my father finished his thoracic surgery residency and fellowship. We initially lived in Palama where my father’s idea of entertainment was watching home movies of cardiac surgery operations. I guess that’s when I knew that I wanted to be a surgeon. Growing up, I worked in many departments at a local hospital: from the storeroom and purchasing, to pathology, medical records, and the operating room. I returned back to Washington, D.C. for medical school and met the doctor who delivered me as my obstetrics professor. I knew at that point that I had then come full circle. After completing my residency in Texas, I returned to Hawaii and joined Kaiser Permanente in 1990.
In my practice, I believe in putting the patient at the center of care, and treating them as I would any member of my family. I received the Surgical Teacher of the Year Award in 2004, 2005, and 2006, and was featured in Honolulu Magazine’s Best Doctors from 2009 to 2013.I trust all of my medical colleagues at Hawaii Permanente Medical Group (HPMG) and know that I can always rely on them for help and advice. I am at liberty to pursue research interests, attend medical conferences, and network with peers in other Kaiser Permanente regions and our Program Office on quality initiatives. At HPMG, I serve as chair of Quality and Risk, surgeon champion for the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP), Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP) and General Surgery peer review liaison. I am a member of the Bioethics Committee, Credentials Committee, Regional Infection Control Committee, HRST/OR Committee, and the Permanente Peer Review Committee. At the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine, I am an Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery. At the Kaiser Permanente National Surgical Symposium and NSQIP Kaiser Permanente breakout sessions, I have given presentations on Hawaii region quality improvement. I have published in Archives of Surgery, Emedicine, and elsewhere.I am a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, and the Society of Surgical Oncology.
I enjoy spending time with my family, and sports such as tennis, golf, and snow skiing. I also was an avid musician, and have played in several local bands.
