I was born and raised in the town of Hilo on Hawaii Island. I then moved to Oahu for college and later attended the University of Hawaii, John A. Burns School of Medicine. I did a transitional year internship at Metrowest Medical Center in Framingham, Massachusetts, a physical medicine and rehabilitation residency at the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, and a pain medicine fellowship at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, all programs under the auspices of Harvard Medical School.
Because of the impact I saw physicians having on peoples’ ability to live healthy and active lives, I decided that medicine was the career for me. Managing patients’ pain is a big part of that, and I decided to specialize in pain medicine, a specialty in which I felt I could do the most to alleviate acute suffering.
To keep up-to-date with the latest developments in my field and in medicine overall, I read professional journals, attend medical conferences, participate in continuing medical education programs, and consult my colleagues in the various specialties. In addition, the journals put out by my professional associations—the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the American Academy of Pain Medicine, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and the American Society for Nutrition—also give me access to the latest findings and recommendations.
Joining the Hawaii Permanente Medical Group is a great opportunity for me to care for the people of Hawaii as part of an exceptional health care organization. Every day I’m thankful for the warm, cooperative working relationships among physicians here, the supportive staff, and the modern technology that makes coming to work a pleasure.
My philosophy of care is to always have compassion for my patients and to listen attentively to their questions, concerns, and hopes. It’s my job to help them to the best of my ability in adjusting to their medical conditions, coping with their pain, and living their best.
Exercising regularly, staying active, and eating a proper diet help me to stay physically fit. For my mental and emotional wellness I try to spend quality time with my family. I place great value on being a good husband and father.
