I was born in Denton, Texas and grew up in Eugene and Portland, Oregon. My parents were very supportive of me when I was growing up. They encouraged me to create my own path and with this freedom I was able to find my way to a career in medicine. Following college in Seattle I attended the Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University in Chicago. After enduring several Midwest winters, I returned to the Pacific Northwest and did my family medicine residency at Tacoma Family Medicine. My husband supported and encouraged me as I completed my medical education, and after my residency we had the wonderful opportunity to come to Hawaii. We were delighted when other family members followed.
I’ve always been interested in helping people to be their best. This desire, combined with a love of science and mathematics, pointed me toward a career in medicine. Family medicine seemed like the ideal specialty for me because I wanted to take care of multiple generations within one family, as well as people all along the age spectrum. I enjoy knowing people as part of a family system and helping them to see patterns in their relationships.
To stay up-to-date in my field I read medical journals and subscribe to medical podcasts that review and discuss a wide range of medical literature. I also research topics of interest using online medical databases.
The Hawaii Permanente Medical Group has a reputation for promoting patient wellness and striving to deliver extraordinary patient care. Everyone is professional, courteous, and thoughtful. It’s an honor to be part of HPMG.
My intention is to provide the highest standard of care that I can and to take into consideration individual circumstances and wishes. Educating my patients and having them participate in developing their treatment plans allows them to take responsibility for their own health. My goal is for them to feel comfortable with their care, including any follow-up steps they may have to take. I strive to listen to what they say and respect them as I do my own family.
I have a home yoga practice that helps me improve my health, both physically and mentally. For relaxation and grounding I also rely on spending quality time with my husband, talking with my family, walking around the city, getting lost in a new book, floating in the ocean, and exploring the island.
