Waialua, on the North Shore of Oahu, was my childhood home. It was a close-knit community of quiet country living. Days were filled with swimming and fishing and playing in grassy fields.
As medical school took me through a rotation in anesthesiology at Kapiolani Medical Center, I was able to work with prominent pediatric anesthesiologists. I found that I enjoyed performing nerve blocks that help reduce or eliminate pain for patients. After finishing residency in anesthesiology I also completed a pediatric anesthesiology fellowship at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. While visiting my aunt in the hospital when she was being treated for colon cancer, I observed the surgeons and nurses who cared for her. I realized that not only does it take knowledge of medicine to nurse a patient back to health but also a heart of compassion. This compassion is what guides me to be thorough and complete, and to do my very best to keep my patients comfortable and at ease during their procedures.I am very privileged to work with a great group of physicians and department staff at Hawaii Permanente Medical Group (HPMG). We are able to learn from each other and can call on any specialist to assist in patient care. Computerized medical records provide access to all patient information with the press of a key.Volunteering in my community is also a source of satisfaction. My family and I thoroughly enjoyed participating in the Great Aloha Run and the HPMG’s Annual Day of Service by working in the taro patch in Heeia.
The time I spend with my wife and daughter is very important to me. I also enjoy fishing, diving, kayaking, grilling dinner, playing tennis with my daughter, and taking annual fishing trips to Alaska.
