Acerca de mí
I was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, raised in Waialae Kahala and attended public school (Kalani ’73). My early curiosity in Biology and the Life Sciences developed into an interest in Medicine.
Acerca de mi práctica médica
I believe that providing medical care is a team effort. The capacity for collaboration between the many disciplines caring for an individual patient is why I joined Kaiser Permanente. The Hawaii Permanente Medical Group maintains a high standard of excellence that allows me and my colleagues the freedom to make clinical decisions framed within professional ethics and accountability. As Associate Medical Director of primary care specialties, most of my time is spent with administrative duties overseeing clinic operations and the Departments of Primary Care Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Pediatrics, Behavioral Health and Ambulatory ObGyn. That does not leave me much capacity to see patients regularly as a primary care physician. What clinical work I thus do is centered on Obesity Medicine and the medical management of bariatric surgery patients. In my 30 years of practice (primary care, hospital-based internal medicine and now medical bariatrics), the acts of medical heroism I have seen have been acts of charity and compassion. I believe in shared decision making and patient-family centered care. I am a member of the American College of Physicians, the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, and The Obesity Society. In my spare time I volunteer for the Polynesian Voyaging Society.
Cómo vivo bien
I enjoy walking while listening to music (different versions of classic jazz standards and anything melodic by Keith Jarrett), I also love prone paddle boarding anywhere between Sandy Beach and Waikiki.
