I was born and raised in a small town in eastern North Carolina. We had a population of less than 1500 people. I am an only child, but was brought up with a host of cousins in a very close family. As a child, I always wanted to be a teacher, but as my grandmother began to age and develop health problems, I felt the need to go into health care to ensure the doctors were providing her with the best care. It was then that I realized my whole family could use a health care resource, and I became the first person to go into medicine in my family. I have always been intrigued by the body and its amazing intricate network. I love my job and consider myself to be one of the lucky ones to have found my niche in life. Caring for women and teaching them about their bodies and childbirth are my passions. After more than ten years of delivering these bundles of joy, I still tear up occasionally. It is such an amazing and precious moment in which I am so honored to be involved in.
I was raised and taught to treat everyone the way you want to be treated. I carry that same principle with me in my practice. Honesty, respect, trust, taking the time to listen and building a rapport are important pieces to having a great member and provider relationship. I love to interact with members and their families in order to involve the whole unit while providing optimal care. Educating and encouraging members is key. Upon leaving the exam room, patients are fully informed about their prognosis, which enhances their involvement in their personal health care. Not only do my patients learn from me, but I learn from them as well. Before joining Kaiser Permanente, the first ten years of my career were spent working with the underserved population in communities in Atlanta and Washington, D.C. The most challenging part of my job at the time was being able to find the necessary resources for my patients who needed further evaluation and/or specialist involvement. Kaiser Permanente has an amazing integrated health care system that allows me to provide the high-quality care that all members deserve. I am incredibly thankful for the opportunity I have been afforded to work for such an amazing organization.
Having grown up in such a small town, I really have an appreciation for the quiet country life where everybody knows everybody. Family is very important to me, and my family is very close. We make an effort to get together often. I am the mother of a rambunctious toddler that keeps me on my toes daily. My life seems to be geared around toddler activities with a sprinkle of adult life with friends in between. Staying active is important to me, as well as staying grounded through my church. I love adventure, social functions, traveling, cooking and most of all, eating!
