Acerca de mí
I grew up in Rhode Island, went across the country for college in California, and graduated from medical school at the University of Iowa before completing my internal medicine residency at Brown University. I moved to Colorado in 2002. I was a hospitalist in Denver for 2 years before joining the Colorado Permanente Medical Group in 2004 in a similar role. I worked at Saint Joseph Hospital, Good Samaritan Medical Center, Sky Ridge Medical Center and Swedish Medical Center, and thoroughly appreciate the integrated health care delivery system that Kaiser Permanente offers.
Acerca de mi práctica médica
For the first 15 years of my career, I enjoyed working in the inpatient arena – the acuity and complexity of disease was a constant and stimulating challenge. I also noticed how patients and their families frequently felt scared and overwhelmed. The hospital is a tough place to be, let alone to heal. When I asked myself what I found most satisfying about patient care, I realized it was the entire process of helping patients and their families face serious illness, not just diagnosing and treating medical conditions.
With generous permission from my family, I left home to undertake subspecialty training in palliative medicine via a one-year fellowship at the University of Kansas. It was a huge sacrifice for all of us, and an investment in our future. I’m ecstatic to both be back at home and back with the Colorado Permanente Medical Group, now with Supportive Care.
My hope is that all patients and the medical community can fully appreciate how palliative/supportive care is not “stopping treatment” at all, or only “end of life” care. It is a team approach to comprehensive symptom management, future planning, and tailoring medical care to most fit your values. I take the time to get to know my patients and their families, and what they value most. I believe that listening is vital to truly understanding my patients’ needs and concerns. I’m fortunate to be part of a Supportive Care team of nurses, social workers, pharmacists and physician colleagues. I trust my Kaiser Permanente colleagues to take excellent care of my patients if I’m not available – our culture of teamwork is very strong.
Como vivo bien
I enjoy photography, traveling with my family, watching the Olympics and major sporting events of all kinds, and snowboarding. I enjoy eating and appreciate Denver’s growing restaurant scene – I love the experience of diverse foods. I think Red Rocks is the best concert venue on Earth. I am an (aging) triathlete, and I enjoy taking our dog for walks on the weekends. My kids don’t understand why my wife and I enjoy fantasy football, but we do.
