I hail from a small Northern Indiana town near Fort Wayne and am the youngest of nine children. With a huge extended family, I had to learn how to get along with all kinds of people. At the University of Indianapolis, I studied philosophy, in addition to the sciences, because I like to think deeply and question everyday assumptions. I was drawn to medicine for the clichéd reason that I really like helping people and I'm endlessly fascinated by the subject, but my physician older brother was a major influence. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) was a natural fit, because I love neurology, orthopedics, and the field's emphasis on function and personal recovery. I met my wonderful wife, a librarian and conservationist, in college. We have nine fewer children than my parents did, but hope to get our first dog soon and go from there.
Acerca de mi práctica médica
I am a PM&R physician who specializes in non-operative and interventional spine care. My practice involves treating acute and chronic neck and back pain, scoliosis, arthritis, osteoporosis, spondylolisthesis, spondylolysis, radiculopathy, herniated discs, sacroiliac joint pain, etc. I perform electromyography and nerve conduction studies (EMG/NCS) and spinal injections. I am a member of the International Spine Intervention Society, the North American Spine Society, and the American Academy of PM&R.I like thinking of my time with patients as straightforward conversations where I try to figure out the problem, and just as importantly, understand how it's affecting their day-to-day lives. I believe in shared decision making rather than telling people what to do. As with much of medicine, especially spine care, less is usually more. Injections and surgery are useful tools that I believe should be used thoughtfully, and so I favor a conservative approach that emphasizes a person's total health. I enjoy empowering patients to ultimately take care of themselves and reach their functional goals.
Como vivo bien
I enjoy spending time with my wife and friends. Geeks Who Drink trivia is a regular Denver pastime for us. We hike and snowshoe whenever we get a chance, hopefully soon with a puppy. We enjoy all the tasty Denver food. I try to always make time for regular exercise and plan to try a 5k in the near future (you have to start somewhere!). Mindfulness meditation and yoga are my preferred ways to deeply unwind and recharge, but we do enjoy a good TV show or movie (usually comedy). I love music (lots of pop and rock from before 1990 and a few modern bands) and I'm hoping to get back into playing guitar again after lapsing during medical school. Podcasts make the sometimes slow Denver commute tolerable. I look forward to being able to start reading for leisure again after over a decade of school/medical reading.
