I grew up in a small town south of Columbus, Ohio with my parents and two brothers. I went to college in Columbus and studied nursing because I didn't know what else study. Two years after graduating from college, I moved to Boston where I continued my practice in pediatric nursing while enjoying being young and single in the big city. I then became a labor and delivery nurse and have never practiced outside the OB/GYN field since.I married and had two children then moved back to Ohio where I decided I had to become a nurse midwife. After a couple of years (and a move to Colorado), I attended graduate school at the University of Colorado and have been practicing in Colorado since. My children, Caitlyn and Kyle, are grown and I live with one dog, too smart for his own good, and a cat.
I am woman-centered in my philosophy and see myself as a partner in a woman's care. I believe that a woman is in the best position to make health care decisions that affect her life and my role is to provide guidance and information. I believe in a holistic approach to health care and am learning more about integrative medicine, incorporating recommendations that include traditional allopathic medicine along with alternatives.I see pregnancy and childbirth as a life experience that cannot be separated from the context of a woman's life, not as a medical event. I believe that every woman should be empowered by her pregnancy, labor and birth, and that this happens when women are active participants in decisions regarding their pregnancy and birth.
I spend my leisure time developing my art skills and exploring visual arts. I love mixed media art, particularly fiber arts. I also dabble in pastel. I love to travel and do so whenever I can. I have a long list of places to go both internationally and in the United States. I hope to someday do some volunteer work internationally. I exercise daily with my 4-legged, canine personal trainer which is one of the top necessities in my life. I have worked very hard to develop a work-life balance and I enjoy my life.
