I grew up in Arizona and met my wife there while completing my pediatric residency. We chose to move to Colorado after residency to be near the mountains. While at Kaiser Permanente I practiced pediatrics and medical informatics. In 2000, I left to pursue my interests in informatics as companies developed electronic medical records. While doing this I continued pediatrics in private practice. As my kids have grown and the opportunity to return to Kaiser Permanente came my way, I jumped at the chance to return to the style of practice that I feel is best. While I made the decision to become a physician in high school, I have always enjoyed many areas of medicine and didn’t decide on pediatrics until I was in medical school. Practicing pediatrics at Kaiser Permanente allows me to care for children the way I was trained to do, while in an environment that is supportive of both the physician and the patient.
My practice style has been consistent over the course of my career. I have always enjoyed interacting with the children and try to get them involved in their own care. As the kids get older I like for them to be able to talk to me about their health and have an understanding of what they can do to maintain or improve it. I frequently find myself agreeing with the old saying that laughter is the best medicine and bringing humor into my interactions with the patients and families, while being serious when needed. Early in my career I chose to spend my visits educating families to care for themselves and to give them the information they need to join with me in making decisions regarding my patients. I feel that this results in quality care that makes everyone more comfortable.
Just as I like to enjoy different aspects of medicine, the same goes for my life away from the office. I can frequently be found in the mountains enjoying my time off. Our family hikes, bikes, skis and camps. We also enjoy motorsports such as riding ATVs, and dirt bikes and boating. While in town, we frequently will go for walks and bike rides when we’re not with my daughter at softball or my son at Boy Scouts. I do most of my own home and yard maintenance and projects along with car care. This gives me more ways to relax while giving me something I can take pride in. I feel staying busy in a variety of activities is a key to having a life well lived.
